As a municipal company, Apoldaer Wasser GmbH is responsible for the public drinking water supply and wastewater disposal in the area between Bad Bibra and Mellingen and has planned extensive renovation measures. The existing main supply pipes made of grey cast iron have been in operation since the 1960s and have reached their age limit. After intensive examination and consideration of all factors such as economic efficiency, environmental compatibility and implementation deadlines, it was decided not to renovate the grey cast iron pipeline and to use the existing route of the old pipeline for a new installation. The most economical and environmentally friendly option was chosen with the installation of a flexible drinking water pipe made of polyethylene with a life expectancy of at least 100 years. The GEROfit^® R drinking water pressure pipe with a highly crack-resistant protective jacket made of a modified polyolefin compound offers all the prerequisites for damage-free installation using the relining method.
A major challenge for the parties involved was the need to shut down the old pipeline and install a temporary water pipeline for the duration of the pipe installation. In close collaboration between the client and the construction company Josef Pfaffinger in co-operation with the pipe manufacturer Gerodur, a cost-effective concept was developed and implemented to avoid restrictions in the potable water supply. This involved the installation of an exposed "emergency water pipe".
The work was carried out smoothly and on time in the first construction phase in Eckartsberga, so that the supply of residents was ensured without any disruptions.
