Clean potable water supply for new residential quarter in Helsinki

Permeation-tight pipe system in contaminated soil
The City of Helsinki is planning a new residential quarter in the Pitäjänmäki area covering an area of 3,000m². For this, the corresponding infrastructure must be created or renovated. In the course of investigations for new water pipeline routes, enormously contaminated soil was discovered on the site of an old paint and metal factory. Among other things, various metals such as zinc, copper and lead were detected, as well as various hydrocarbons and di-, tri- and tetrachloroethylenes. The municipal company HSY (Helsinki Region Environmental Services) therefore decided to rehabilitate the pipes with the KIWA BRL K-17101 certified, permeation-tight pipe system GEROfit® REX from Gerodur. The rehabilitation of the old pipe route proved to be very challenging, as it had already been repaired with couplings in several places in the past. GEROfit® REX drinking water pipes are excellently suited for installation using the burst lining method, as they guarantee the installation of an undamaged and permeation-tight pipeline despite the high installation requirements (bending and tensile force load capacity) and the enormous stress on the pipe outer wall due to sharp-edged material in the old pipe channel.
